The Art of Resistance

Not all artists in Ukraine can fight on the military front, but a lot of sculptors from the first days of war are making Czech hedgehogs to protect their country from tanks, while many graphic artists and painters have enlisted to Ukrainian Armed Forces.

But the most powerful weapon is that the artists continue to create their works and send them to us in spite of war ranging on, abandoned, blown up studios, loss of art materials so much needed for work, and messages about friends and relatives dying as a result of war.

By showing works at exhibitions, we build a dialogue between artists from Ukraine and the audience in Europe. Our task is not only to convey the experiences and tragedy of the war, but also to create resistance, fighting indifference to horrors in Ukraine.

The second-best weapon is fundraising and selling their paintings. Proceeds turns into helmets and body armor, food, water, medicines, roof over their heads and lives of those guys whose works we show today in Spain. The poster shows a bottle of expensive champagne converted into a Molotov’s cocktail (for self-defense against Russian rapists and murderers) demonstrating how life of the Ukrainian girls has changed since then.

The artist Daria Filippova called this work “cocktail that every girl, dreams of”. We chose this picture for the poster because it perfectly illustrates art of resistance to the Russian invasion of Ukraine. Bravery and strength even of those who considered themselves powerless during this terrible war.
